Psychodynamic case formulation
We can think about symptoms, development, relationships, defenses, unconscious expectations, and what the patient may be communicating through the treatment itself.
For clinicians
Psychodynamic supervision and professional consultation for therapists, trainees, physicians, and other healthcare professionals.
Clinical work under pressure
The patient may be frightened, angry, mistrustful, or ambivalent. The clinician may be anxious, overresponsible, defensive, bored, or trying too hard to help. The institution may be rushing the work, splitting the team, or asking one relationship to contain a problem created elsewhere.
Supervision gives us a way to think about all of it without reducing the treatment to technique or treating the clinician’s reactions as an embarrassment to be removed.
We can think about symptoms, development, relationships, defenses, unconscious expectations, and what the patient may be communicating through the treatment itself.
Your reactions are part of the clinical information. We can examine what belongs to you, what may be evoked by the patient, and how to use that understanding without acting it out.
I have particular interest in work shaped by illness, healthcare, risk, hierarchy, mistrust, disability, residency training, and the competing demands of patients, families, teams, and systems.
Consultation can also address the clinician’s development: authority, uncertainty, boundaries, ambition, rescue fantasies, fear of error, and how to remain curious when the work feels consequential.
Format
You may want a single consultation about a difficult case, a short series around a defined clinical problem, or ongoing supervision. The form of our work depends on your discipline, level of training, goals, and any licensing or institutional requirements that apply.
